Rich fields of gold, ochre and green move across the foreground beneath a wooded hillside saturated in violet, burgundy and deep blue. Claire Bigbee uses broad, expressive passages of color to describe the landscape without rendering it literally, allowing light, atmosphere and color to carry the composition.
The warm foreground pulls toward a narrow band of reflected light before meeting the darker tree line beyond. Above it, a softened lavender-blue sky gives the painting a sense of openness and distance. The contrast between the luminous field and richly colored hillside gives the work both depth and an almost abstract intensity.
